Mormons and Bikinis

As a Mormon, I have always respected the concept of modesty. I love modest fashions and I truly believe that dressing fashionably and modestly shouldn't be a hard thing. Unfortunately, in the world we live in today it seems that modesty is not always considered fashionable (however, I'm beginning to see more and more modest fashions). I hate how short shorts and bikinis have become such normal attire in society today. It's disgusting. Some might argue, at least regarding bikinis, that people should not sexualize them. Some people believe there's nothing wrong with revealing your midriff. I disagree.

Here's how I honestly feel about wearing bikinis. As members of our church, we have been instructed to not reveal our midriff (or wear tight, revealing clothing). Now yes, I realize that swimsuits are tight pieces of clothing already, but I believe that when you're wearing a bikini, it suggests that you want to show off your body in a revealing manner. I agree, there certainly are some cute bikinis out there with cute prints, but there are also a lot of cute one pieces (even modest tankinis that are cute). I'm not married, so I don't wear the "magical undergarments" haha, but regardless of that matter I feel like the idea of modesty should be applied to when we're swimming too. Why do some female members of our church believe it's appropriate to be wearing such revealing swim apparel? If the Savior stood beside me while I was wearing a bikini, I'd certainly feel uncomfortable and I think that's the question you have to ask yourself. "If the Savior stood beside me, what would he think or say?"

I'll be honest, when it comes to exercising, yes, I do wear a tank top and running shorts, but that's because that's comfortable for me to exercise in. No, I'm not showing my midriff. Yes, maybe that exercise outfit might be a bit revealing or tight (and maybe I'm being hypocritical  which some may think), but I certainly don't feel like I'm trying to show off my body. My body just gets overheated when I exercise. However, how can you justify wearing a bikini? I don't really see it. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that, yes, as Mormons we aren't always going to be perfect in our actions, but when it comes to swimwear, that is a matter I feel strongly about. I do feel that bikinis over expose your body. Maybe they don't always necessarily "turn men on," but is there a reason to show off that much of one's body? You're just going to the pool or the beach. Plus, I'd worry about my bikini top coming undone too. I've heard so many horror stories about someone's bikini top falling off while they were at the beach. Eek!

Well, that is all I have for today. Maybe I was too controversial or hypocritical, but that's just how I feel regarding the matter. I hope I didn't offend anyone too much. If you have something to add please feel free to comment below! :)

Maybe watching this might help:

  1. I adore that yellow swimsuit haha, so cute. :)
Its for sure easier to dress fashionably and modestly in fall, winter, spring (at least in Washington since fall-spring is all sorta the same cool rainy weather)compared to summer, but like you said- its not that terribly difficult.

One thing I strongly believe is that modesty should be about respect for your body and for yourself. I have a little trouble agreeing with the "don't wear something because it might affect the boys". If guys can't control themselves because a girl is wearing skinny jeans or her knees are showing then the blame shouldn't be laid on the girl haha.

Anywho, great blog post. Modest is hottest! ;) :)

  2. Right? I love it too! :) Exactly! Dressing modestly isn't that hard! I am totally all for wearing shorts during the summer! just not the short short ones. They look really trashy, I think.

AMEN! Love your comment! I have nothing against wearing skinny jeans or skinny crop pants or whatever. The whole not wearing "tight, revealing clothing" part of modesty can be a tough one. But, when I wear skinny jeans or see other girls in skinny jeans it's not like I'm thinking "oh my gosh...eww" (unless a girl that shouldn't be wearing skinny jeans is wearing them, like a larger gir)l. I do think that wearing a bikini is completely inappropriate and they sexualize your body...if I were a guy I would definitely look at a woman differently than if she wasn't wearing a bikini. Guys can control their minds to some extent, but I think it's a lot harder for them to if a girl is wearing a bikini...see what I mean?

    Thanks! I totes agree ;)
